Using RIMMF. Tutorial #11, Import a Bib record when you know it has a NAF record for its Expression, but not for its Work

In this tutorial, we are going to learn about importing an LC Bib record as a RIMMF Manifestation record when you know that it has a Work NAF record.

Alternate: Use a pre-built folder

If you want to jump to this tutorial without doing the previous tutorials, follow the "Download Web Folder" instructions and download the following folder from our website:

Import a Bib record for a Manifestation

Find and View the Manifestation Record for Importing

  • <F3>
  • Change the Search Source to '[BIB]Title'
  • Search: trollmakt
We are looking for the hit with the Uniform title: "Island Magic. Swedish"

Because there is a Uniform title associated with this result,
we need to search the 'Author. Uniform Title' heading,
  and bring in authority data
  before we bring in bibliographic data;
because we want to use the 'authoritative data',
from an Authority record, whenever we can find one.
  • Switch to [ID]NAF
  • Change search to: Goudge, Elizabeth, 1900-1984. Island magic
Notice that there is no NAF record for the Work,
only for the Swedish and French translations of it.

Import the Expression

  • Double-click on the Swedish heading (this opens the MARC record)
  • Click <Import>
Notice that the Author is unchecked,
  because we have it in the EI already;
and RIMMF will be creating the Work record
from data in the NAF Expression record.
  • Click on the <Import> button
    • Select <Selected records>
    • <OK>
  • Double-click on the Work heading
Notice that there isn't much data in this record;
always try to add more data if you can.
Remember that Wikipedia has useful data about this author and her works.
  • <F3>
    • Switch Search Option to “[Wikipedia”]
    • Click <Search>
    • Click the “Bibliography” link
Notice the date for "Island Magic" is 1934.

Return to the Work record
  • Click on the “Title of the Work” label
  • <F4> to insert a blank label
  • Enter “Date of Work” <Tab>
  • Type: 1934
  • <F4> to insert another blank label
  • Enter “Source Consulted” <Tab>
  • <Ctrl+S> to save the record
Now we need to check the Expression data.

Notice that the Swedish title "Trollmakt"
  has been added to the Expression data;
as a Variant Access Point (VAP)

Let us say that we are fairly sure that this expression record
is for textual content, and was first made available
the date of the Source Consulted resource.
  • Click on the “Language of Expression” label
  • <F4> to insert a blank label
  • Enter “Content Type” <Tab>
  • Type: “Text
  • <F4> to insert a blank label
  • Enter “Date of Expression” <Tab>
  • Type: 1947
  • <Ctrl+S> to save the record

Import the Bib Record

  • <F3> to find the manifestation data for this expression
  • Change the Search Source to '[BIB]Title'
  • Search: trollmakt
  • Double-click on the title with the Uniform Title: “Island Magic” to open the MARC record
  • Click <Import>
Notice that the Author, Work and Expression are unchecked,
we have them all already, and the Manifestation data
will be nicely linked to them,
  via the Expression record.
Unfortunately, at this time,
if there is additional Work or Expression information
  in the Bib record,
you will have to add it manually.
  • Click the down arrow by the <Import> button
    • Select <Selected records>
    • Click <OK>
  • Double-click on the Manifestation in the R-Tree
Looks ok.
  • <Ctrl+Alt+S> to open the source record
I can't see anything we can add to the Work or Expression record

View the R-Tree

  • Find your way to the R-Tree for the Person: Goudge
    • <Ctrl+E>
    • Select: Goudge heading
    • Click <Open in R-Tree>
See how the Tree is growing.

End this Tutorial

  • Close everything

If you are finished playing with RIMMF for now, close RIMMF. If you want to proceed, go to Tutorial #12
